Andy Day

Here I painted Andy Day from Aberdeenshire, a retired crofter who still lives in his ancestral home.

Despite the fact he’s blind, Andy continues to grow vegetables in his garden and exercise his beautiful baritone voice, even singing in the occasional local public event. I was so inspired by Andy’s love of life and his strong belief to live life to the full, I simply had to paint him. He’s a wonderful human being in every sense.

On the day I painted him, he was making his way back to his cottage after a busy day planting broad beans. It was a beautiful April afternoon and Andy’s hands and trousers where covered in earth where he’d knelt down to ply his favorite pastime.

Thank you for the inspiration, Andy.
